Lewin's Force Field Analysis

      Central Michigan University, EDL 660, Dr. J, Richard F Alexander

       Lewin's created the force field by letting everyone know that when a change is being made in business or education, or in almost any organization there are two two forces, a driving force pushing for the change and a restraining force wanting the status quo or equilibrium.  His three step process is unfreezing the existing equilibrium, make the new change and then freeze the change that will establish a new equilibrium that will resist a change.  Developing self awareness and emotional intelligence will help us understand the actions and reactions of those around us.  Lewin suggests the following steps to use Force Field Analysis:
       1.  Define the change you want to see
       2.  Brainstorm or Mind Map the Driving Forces (For Change)
       3.  Brainstorm or Mind Map the Restraining Forces (Against Change)
       4.  Evaluate the Driving and Restraining Forces, from 1 to 5, weak to strong
       5.  Strategise,  weaken or strengthen, driving and/or restraining forces
       6.  Prioritise Action Steps, reducing the impact on the restraining forces can be quicker.

      Lunenburg and Ornstein writes about the Force Field Analysis on page 207, Chapter 8:  The Pressures for Change and the Resistance to Change;
      Driving Force:
      Accountability, Changing Demographics, Staffing Shortages, Changing Technology and Knowledge Explosion, and Processes and People.
      Restraining Force:
      Interference with Need Fulfillment, Fear of the Unknown, Threats to Power and Influence, Knowledge and Skill Obsolescence, Organization Structure, Limited Resources, Collective Bargaining Agreements.
